HEARING THE VOICE OF GOD Part 2(2) How Does God Speak?

By Ps. Jerry

Does God speak to us audibly?

This is recorded in the scriptures in the lives of Moses, Samuel and many others. He spoke audibly during the baptism of Jesus and to Saul of Tarsus on the road to Damascus. Now, have I heard God speak audibly to me? Well, I don’t think I can be sure of this. But there was one instance as a young man in secondary school, where His words to me were so loud that I’m not sure if I heard it or felt it, but I turned around just as if someone had spoken audibly to me. And this is what He said, “I am no man’s debtor.”  That was the word I felt I heard. Those words came at a time when I was undergoing great personal trial. I shared with a friend what I had sacrificed for the Lord. Later, when I was in my room, God told me “I am no man’s debtor.” Later, I heard in my spirit, the Lord saying, “What you have given me, I will return a hundredfold!”  Remember, no matter what, you cannot out give God!

me. (Psalm 23:4) The staff is to protect against wild animals. The rod is to correct the sheep.  And that’s how God deals with us in His love.

God loves you and He wants to talk to you. He is going to start speaking, if you are willing to follow.  Now, God is not going to speak to you if you are not willing to follow. You must desire it in your heart. When you hear the voice of God, you must follow, and blessings will overtake you. God is the ultimate authority. Honor Him, love Him and follow Him – and all will go well with you!

Dreams and Visions

God also speaks to us in dreams and visions. Most of the time, this is ‘ball park’ or general but sometimes it is exact and specific. It is different from normal dreams and you know it’s not from you. Your spirit reacts and there is confirmation. It has nothing to do with your emotions and your thinking.  You are asleep, still and quiet. Your flesh does not disturb you. Then there are visions which is something you see in the daytime, a daytime dream or dream when you are awake.  If God gives you a dream or a vision, you don’t have to fight and strive to make it come to pass.  You do not have to force it. You just lay back. And that’s a secret of David, he was very laid back. When God anointed him and made him king, he went through struggles and opposition for fourteen years.  But God brought all His promises to pass.

God speaks through HIS prophets. As Nathan to David, Samuel to Saul, God uses prophets and men of God to speak to you. When a prophet comes and gives you a word, don’t take it lightly, write it in your journal and then check what God is doing in your life.  When God uses a prophet, it means His communication with you is difficult already. Normally, God speaks to you directly. He doesn’t need to tell somebody else what He wants you to do. He will tell you. David had that problem when Nathan came and revealed his wrongdoing, saying, “You are the man!” (2 Samuel 12:7) David recognized that the prophet spoke on behalf of God. God’s word says, Touch not my anointed, and do my prophets no harm. (Psalm 105:15) So do not take the words of His prophets lightly.

Word of God/Bible

The word of God jumps up at you, a word in season. When you read the scriptures and you find the words jump up at you, that’s the way God speaks to you. You ask a question and suddenly when you read the word of God, the answer comes. You may read 1 Samuel 15:22 and it says, obedience is better than sacrifice, and you go, “Lord, this is you speaking to me!”  Recognize that it is God, you may not like HIS word for you but He is God and we are His sheep. Our part is to follow.

Still Small Voice

The most frequent and clear way God speaks is in a still small voice.  He speaks in a still, small and supernatural voice within you.  Many preachers say that it is like a radio. You have to tune in to the correct frequency. You must be sensitive to the supernatural.  You must believe there is another realm. But a very important caveat to remember is – just as you can hear God’s voice speaking to you, you can also hear the voice of the enemy speaking to you.  God speaks like a gentleman when you are willing to hear. The enemy speaks whenever he wants to speak. A good example is that of Peter in Matthew 16:16-17, Simon Peter answered, “You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Jesus replied, “Blessed are you Simon son of Jonah, for this was not revealed to you by man, but by my Father in heaven.” Jesus declared it was God who gave Peter the revelation of who He is. But in the same chapter when Jesus told the disciples He was going to the cross, Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, “Never Lord,” he said “this shall never happen to you.” Jesus turned and said to Peter, “Get behind me, Satan.  You are a stumbling block to me. You do not have in mind the things of God but the things of man.”  (Mat. 16:22-23) So here is the apostle Peter hearing God and speaking the word of God at one time, and then hearing the devil and speaking the word of the devil at another time within a short span of time!  So, be careful whose voice you are hearing… whose voice are you listening to?

Does God shout and force you or does He softly and gently lead?

1 Kings 19:11-12: “and He said go forth and stand on the mount before the Lord and behold the Lord passed by.  And a great and strong wind rent the mountain and broke in pieces the rocks before the Lord, but the Lord was not in the wind.  And after the wind an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake. And after the earthquake a fire but the Lord was not in the fire and after the fire a still small voice.” So, God doesn’t shout at you nor does He force you, God speaks in a still small voice.  He respects your free will. He gently leads you. Isaiah 40:11 says, “Like a shepherd He will tend His flock.  In His arm He will gather the lambs and carry them in his bosom.  He will gently lead the nursing ewes.” He said nursing ewes. With older Christians, He may not be so gentle. Discipline involves pain and correction which carries an element of force. Your rod and your staff they comfort
