THE PRICE OF DISCIPLESHIP (PART 1) BY BISHOP TORRES
The Bible says, ‘A large crowd was following Jesus. He turned around and said to them, “If you want to be My disciple, you must, by comparison, hate everyone else—your father and mother, wife and children, brothers and sisters—yes, even your own life. Otherwise, you cannot be My disciple. And if you do not carry your own cross and follow Me, you cannot be My disciple. So you cannot become My disciple without giving up everything you own.”
Are you wondering why a large crowd was following Jesus? Because everything was free; free food, free healing, free provision! When it’s offered free, a lot of people will come. But when you tell them there’s a price, nobody wants!
Everything in this earth today is no longer free. There is a price! Some of you may thank God that you received salvation free! Yes, but somebody paid a price!
There are two types of followers of Jesus in the Church today. In the Bible, the word ‘Believer’ is mentioned only two times. The word ‘Christian’ is mentioned three times but the word ‘Disciple’ is mentioned 269 times. Christianity without Discipleship is Christianity without Christ! So who is a Believer and who is a Disciple?
They are those that are called ‘nameless’ and ‘faceless’ people. Their ministry is to come to Church and ‘clean’ the Church every Sunday. They love position but they don’t want responsibility. They are the immature people in the Church. They are the trouble makers in the Church. They want the giftings but no character. They are called Believers because they don’t have identity, stability and clarity in their service to God. They are called an ‘observer’ but they are not a ‘practitioner’.
They are those who obey the Word of God. They are Jesus’ armour bearer and fighter. They imitate and follow the lifestyle of Jesus. They are not just the vacuum cleaner of the Church but they are the soul winner and consolidator of the Church. They are the protector and encourager of the newly saved people in the Church. They are the burden-bearer, shock absorber, light protector of the man of God in the Church. You cannot expect the Church to grow without Disciples! That’s why Jesus’ command to His people before He ascended is, “Go ye into all the world and make disciples.” And to become a Disciple of Jesus there is a price to pay and the price is not cheap!
Sometimes we want to only follow Jesus because we receive something and get something from Him. Do you realise that following Jesus costs your life? Next week we’ll see what is the cost.
