Scripture of the Week: 2 Kings 5:1-15
Naaman was commander of the army of the King of Syria. He was a great and honorable man in the eyes of his master because by him the Lord had given victory to Syria. He was also a mighty man of valor, but he was a leper.
The Syrian army had gone out on a raid and brought back captive a young girl from the land of Israel. A little girl, captured, imprisoned & taken to a foreign land to be a slave. She would have all the human excuse to be bitter and hate her captors. Yet we discover from that confinement, from that limitation she did not forget God’s assignment for her. She rises to the occasion and turned her difficulty into a divine opportunity to show God’s love.
The little girl was made to be a maid to Naaman’s wife. She saw her master had leprosy.  Leprosy in the Bible is basically sin.  Some would have said he deserved it, others would have said he was probably born on the wrong day. They would give a lot of theories and explanations but no solutions.
But the little girl seeing her master suffer, had compassion. She wasn’t bitter with her circumstances but continued to believe in her God.  One day she said to her mistress, “If only my master were with the prophet who is in Samaria! For he would heal him of his leprosy.”  Naaman listened and went to meet Elisha. He followed what Elisha told him to do and he was healed. The little girl knew her God. And that day, Naaman confessed, “Indeed, now I know that there is no God in all the earth!”
Beloved, that is the role of the church; to be carriers of good news no matter where we are and in whatever situation we are in. Look around you: go beyond your boundaries. There is someone waiting to receive the love of God through you!
