KEEP YOUR EYE ON THE PRIZE

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK: PHILIPPIANS 3:13-14

For 40 days at Mt. Sinai, Moses was on the mountain receiving the commandments from God.  While Moses was having his mountain top experience, the children of God were left alone in the wilderness!

They were filled with Fear!  They were depending on Moses to lead them out but he was gone!  They wanted Reassurance.  They wanted something tangible to look to for protection!  So Aaron built a Golden Calf and the people worshipped it.

When Fear sets in our heart, we tend to forget God and seek for something that would give us comfort and security NOW!  And when we do that, we make a Golden Calf – an IDOL!

There are many things we can make into a golden calf.  Many people turn their Pastor into a golden calf!  They don’t have the confidence to go directly to their Father in prayer so when they need something from God, they run to their Pastor and ask him to go to God on their behalf!  A golden calf is anything you look to instead of looking to God!  It can be a carved image, money, another person, a good luck charm, your own talents and abilities.  Daniel 11:31 says Idolatry is an abomination (source of disgust) that brings desolation (emptiness, barrenness).  Idolatry brings a curse (Deuteronomy 27:15).  Idolatry causes the blessings and presence of God to leave (Ezekiel 8:6).  So it is importance to be careful not to make a golden calf!

Reuben was the Firstborn son of Jacob.  As the Firstborn, he was born to a position of great privilege.  Jacob said of Reuben in Genesis 49:3, “Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might and the beginning of my strength, the excellency of dignity and the excellency of power.”  As the Firstborn, Reuben was destined to inherit a Double Portion of his Father’s estate.  He would be the leader of the tribe and the Priest of the family.  But he acted so disgracefully by committing adultery (Genesis 35:22).  This incident changed the course of Reuben’s life.  He lost his Birthright!  The double portion was taken away and given to Joseph.  Leadership was taken away and given to Judah.  Priesthood was taken away and given to Levi.

God had a fantastic destiny for Reuben but he forfeited his future through a golden calf.  Beloved, God has a wonderful Destiny for You also!  Paul gives the secret to victory at the finish line: “Everyone who competes exercises Self Control in All things.”  That’s where Reuben failed!  He wasn’t thinking about what he could lose.  He just wanted comfort NOW and sought them in Bilhah instead of turning to God.  Reuben had taken his eyes off the Prize!  When you lose sight of your goal, you are always in danger!

Beloved, don’t be seduced by what feels good NOW!  Keep Your Eye on the Prize.  1 Corinthians 9:24, “Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the PRIZE.”
