BLESSED FATHER’S DAY
SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK: JAMES 2:23
And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “Abraham believed God, and it was accounted to him for righteousness.” And he was called the friend of God.
The 17th time Abraham’s name is mentioned in the Bible is in Genesis 18:17-19. ‘And the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am doing?” Unbelievable! God Almighty is desiring to share His plans with Abraham! That was Abraham’s greatest blessing – to be a friend of God, to hear God’s voice and to become the Father of many nations.
Something else God says in verse 19, ‘For I have known him, in order that he may command his children and his household after him, that they keep the way of the Lord, to do righteousness and justice, that the Lord may bring to Abraham what He has spoken to him.’ Abraham’s devotion to God not only caused him to walk obediently but also allowed him to influence others, especially those in his own house, to do the same
In his faithfulness and obedience, Abraham demonstrated several other characteristics that we would do well to emulate so that we too might become friends of God.
Whatever God wanted Abraham to do, he did. Whether it was leaving his homeland (Hebrews 11:8-16), sending out one son (Genesis 21:9-14) or sacrificing another (Hebrews 11:17-19), he obeyed God.
His unselfish nature is not only seen in giving his nephew Lot first choice of land in which to pasture his flocks and herds (Genesis 13:9) but also in his willingness to intercede for the people of Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 18:22-23). Even though they were wicked, Abraham was concerned for them and did what he could to spare them from the judgment which came upon them.
Abraham went through a lot; barrenness, great disappointment, prayers not being answered! But he stood faithfully and demonstrated great wisdom and leadership. In a moment of desperation and frustration, God invaded and gave him a new hope! Beloved, this 17th season may be like that but we need to know that God will not hide from us what He is doing. Will you obey God? Will you command your family to also follow God in all your ways? That’s why God chose Abraham. Because God could trust in him!
