How does God speak? First, you must appreciate there is a macro aspect: where God speaks as Creator God. God speaks to the world at large, to humanity, to mankind like in the Bible. This is known as the logos.
Then there is the micro way of speaking, which we call rhema, where God addresses individuals directly and personally.
The macro has to do with understanding who God is, what kind of person HE is, and learning what HIS likes and dislikes are. A renowned preacher, Ern Baxter says that God uses anything and everything to speak to you about Himself. Psalm 19:1 says “The heavens declare the glory of God, the sky proclaim the work of His hand”. The heavens are declaring to you who God is. The heavens are showing you the work of His hand.
God speaks through His creation
God made the eagle, the lion and the lamb to tell you something about Himself. His whole creation is made to speak to you about Himself. All we need is the understanding so we can appreciate what God is saying. Revelation 5:5 says, … behold, the Lion of the tribe of Judah. He is a lion on one end. John the Baptist said “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29) From history, we know that lambs were sacrificed for the forgiveness of sins. God is telling mankind what we must do to get salvation. So, that’s not a personal or private message, though you may take it as so. God is speaking to the whole world … for God so loved the world that He sent His only begotten Son (John 3:16). GOD is clearly speaking to the world. So, that is the macro aspect.
In Luke 12:27-28, He says, Consider the lilies how they grow…If this is how God clothes the grass of the field which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, how much more will He clothe you, O you of little faith?” God is saying, look around you and see what I do. If I do this for the lilies and the grass, I will do it for you. But you must have faith. The Scriptures are very clear, “without faith it is impossible to please God”. In Job 12:7-8 it says, “But now ask the beasts, and they will teach you; And the birds of the air, and they will tell you; Or speak to the earth, and it will teach you; And the fish of the sea will explain to you”. Can it be any clearer than that? God is speaking through all these things. He loves you. And He wants to share about Himself to you. He has created all these things in the world to share and reveal Himself to you.
Understand yourself better and you will understand God better.
One of the ways God speaks, is through who you are as a person. He made you like Him. Genesis 1:26, “Then God said let us make man in our image, after our likeness to rule and have dominion …” Verse 27 continues: “So, God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him, male and female He created them.” God is Spirit and you are spirit. Understand your spirit, it is made in God’s image and likeness. You are made in the image of God and in His likeness. So, if you want to understand Him, start understanding yourself, because what you see going on in your spirit and in your life is a reflection of what God is like.
One important point to note is that when God made us in His likeness, His likeness is both male and female combined. So, just understanding a man or a woman separately is insufficient to know God. You may get a wrong idea. You have to understand both male and female together, because that is the reflection of God’s likeness. And there are a lot of common areas between men and women, which you will know.
Now, let’s look at 1Corinthians 11:3, “Now I want you to realize the head of every man is Christ and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God.” So, God is teaching us about hierarchy. He created this relationship between man and woman to teach us and speak about who He is to us. He says, I am coming for my Bride. He also uses the relationship between father and son to speak about Himself, the Heavenly Father to us, his children. God, looks at us and loves us! All references relate to love.
Another aspect to consider is emotions. You can feel happy, sad, hurt, loved and even despised. I want to suggest to you that God does too. He can feel hurt and pain too. Because He made you like Him. He feels it when people reject Him. He knows the sorrows you feel. He understands. He made you like Him. You are like God. That’s why when the angels see you, they go, wow, another god? The angels see another small god! Do you have a memory? Do you remember things? I want you to know God has a memory too. He says, I will throw your sins into the sea of forgetfulness. (Micah 7:19) Do you like honor, justice and fairness? All of us do. Something in us cries out for justice. The scripture says the laws of God are written in our hearts. Do you like people to talk to you with respect?God does too. How you address HIM is very important: “Our Father, who art in Heaven, hallowed be your name”. You come into the presence of the King. We enter His gates with thanksgiving in our hearts and we come into His presence with praise on our lips. So, there is a hierarchy. There is a way in which you approach God.
Christ says, I am the good Shepherd, my sheep hear my voice and they follow. Sheep cannot tell the shepherd where it wants to go. Sheep cannot say, I want to eat at this time or I want to go to this particular green pasture. Sheep just follow. And David understood that concept, he wrote in Psalm 23:1, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want”. I will follow, Lord. The Lord says, I take my sheep to the best place. I take my sheep to the greenest pastures. I take them to still waters. The green pasture is the very best place. But the sheep follow the shepherd. It has got no say. That’s how we follow God. We just obey what He says, when He says. To trust and obey is the most important thing in the Kingdom of God. Ultimately, that is the test. Do we obey? If we hear His voice and we follow, blessings overtake us. It doesn’t just come. It overtakes you!
