FROM BONDAGE TO FREEDOM by Pastor Henry

SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK: MARK 5:1-20

A life that God had given a great assignment to, was confined to the graveyard.  He was confined in chains and shackles. Hearing the wrong voice, mixing with the wrong crowd, staying in the wrong place; robbed this man of his divine assignments.  But then He met Jesus!

The Bible says that it was necessary that Jesus came to that place because He knew there was a man who had a divine assignment in his life but he was being confined to the barren land.  God did not intend for him to be there! In the same way, Jesus is coming your way. He wants to bring a change in your life! He wants to set you free from your graveyard to your assignments!  He’s a God who cares. He’s a God who comes down to save because we can’t save ourselves. Only He can transform us!

The man at the tomb had an assignment to share the good news and be a blessing to the people in Decapolis, which means 10 cities but we find him confined and limited in the graveyard.  What a contrast to where God wanted him to be and where he was!

He was in a place called Gadara.  Although it is outside the city, there should be no swine (pigs) there because the Jews are ‘kosher’.  But somehow this religious group of Jews, knowing it was not right, were not living like they should. So the influence, the companions, their speech, their motives were all wrong and as a result the man living in that area also became like one of them.

He was supposed to be in the city but he was found in the tombs.  Beloved, are you bound in shackles and chains; physically, spiritually, financially, emotionally or mentally?  What kind of tomb are you living in?

The man had no covering.  When you have no covering, it shows you are fatherless.  He’s separated, completely cut from his family. He’s homeless.

There was no shame, no honour, no self-worth; he was naked.  He had a different mind.

The man was not living with the living, he was living with the dead!  You can still live in a comfortable home and yet be miserable inside. You can have a lot of food and yet have no appetite.

But when Jesus comes to you and puts your life straight, old things are passed away and all things become new!  You will have self-worth. You will have self-respect. You won’t need to look to others to give you a name, or title or degree because you already know who you are!  You won’t need human accreditation or human approval if you know the God who sent you.

Do you have a habit of lying, cheating or stealing?  All this comes to an end. Jesus comes to destroy the works of the devil and set you free and give you abundant life.  You and I are now children of God. We do not need to do all these things anymore.

Old things are passed away; all things have become new!  Yes, we are changing, but are we becoming new? Demons are disembodied spirits.  They need a body to function in. So when a man sins; when he does something that is wrong, he opens the door giving these evil spirits legal right to come in and occupy his body.

He was in the graveyard.  No future! But when Jesus came, He set him free and gave him a new assignment.  Beloved, if you are still in the tombs, if you are still with the dead, if you are still in nakedness and in shame, Jesus is calling you out!  He wants you to come out from bondage to freedom! From a slave to a son! From defeat to victory! This is the hour of transition! This is the hour of a new beginning!
