SCRIPTURE OF THE WEEK: MATTHEW 6 : 5-13
One day when Jesus came back from prayer, one of His disciples said to Him, “Lord, teach us to pray” (Luke 11:1). The disciples didn’t ask Jesus to teach them to walk on water or cast out demons but they asked Jesus to teach them to pray. Why did they ask Jesus that?
Every time Jesus came down from the mountain after a time of prayer, He performed signs and wonders. So the disciples could tell that the power of Jesus was vitally connected to the ‘prayer of Jesus’.
If prayer is so powerful, why don’t more people pray?
- They don’t know how to pray.
- They are discouraged and disillusioned about prayer because they don’t see a lot of answers through their prayer.
In Matthew 6:5-13, Jesus said when you pray, pray like ‘this’, not like that!
What does it mean to pray like ‘that’; the way Jesus said don’t pray? Long, wordy prayers. Jesus said when you pray do not use a lot of meaningless repetition. Usually a lot of long prayers focus on the problem rather than on God. When you focus on the problem, unbelief is reinforced.
Instead, Jesus said ‘Pray then in this way,
‘Our Father who is in Heaven, hallowed be Your Name.’
The most important priority in your prayer is don’t come to God with your shopping list. Your needs are secondary! The most important thing that you need in your life is the Presence of God! When you have the presence of God, you have everything else that you need.
Joseph – his brothers hated him, they beat him up, he was falsely accused, he was jailed; many terrible things happened to him but Joseph just kept getting promoted and promoted. What was his secret? The Bible says ‘the Lord was with him’! The presence of God!
King David –King Saul was chasing after him. But King Saul was getting lower and lower and King David kept becoming greater and greater. What was his secret? The Lord was with him!
So Church, the first thing Jesus says when you come to pray, don’t worry about your need, don’t worry about your sin, come and access His presence! Knowing His presence, knowing His character will naturally lead you to surrender to Him and do His will. When you do that you’ll start knowing His purpose.
‘Your Kingdom come, Your will be done.’
When you pray you need to access the Purpose of God. When you start serving the purpose of God, you will know the provisions of God. The provisions of God will always follow the purpose of God. Not only does God look after you on the outside, He also looks after you on the inside. The peace of God is the next level.
